History
Green roofs utilized today are lightweight, modern versions of the sod roofs that are centuries-old tradition in Scandinavia. The original inspiration for contemporary green roofs came from rugged Iceland, where green roofs have been used for hundreds of years as a result of limited natural resources for construction materials.
The catalyst that launched our current green roof industry can be traced to the Environmental movements in Europe and America during the 1960’s and the material improvements developed in Germany during the 1970’s.Due to their positive environmental impact and lifecycle properties, modern green roofs are being specified and even mandated in cities throughout the United States.

What is a Green Roof?
Green roof, eco-roof or green roofing systems are general terms referring to vegetated roof coverings consisting of a layer of living vegetation installed on top of a modified conventional roof system. Modern green roof systems replace traditional rooftops, flat or angled up to 45 degrees, with a series of carefully engineered layers. A waterproof and root-resistant membrane is installed on top of a variety of roof structures. A filter layer is placed between the base membrane and a growing medium as thin as 1.2 inches thick. Finally the growth layer is planted with varieties of simple, durable plants: sedums, perennial grasses and other rock-garden type plants.
